I might be as surprised as the next figurine maniac that the 2008 summer edition of Wonder Festival was held just last Sunday, so early in the month of August as we all know it would usually be around the end of August or very least mid August for the biannual hobby summit was to be held at Tokyo Big Sight.

I supposed it could be the fact that with the 2008 Olympics beginning this Friday in Beijing,not that otaku care much about the top sporting event happening once every 4 years.
From Danny Choo, it seems like the event had been well shrunken in terms of exhibition hall space which I think the fact that the event was brought forward might had resulted in Tokyo Big Sight freezing the amount of space catered for it. La Tendo didn't participated this time round; neither did they attended it which was a blessing in disguise as the mad rush for the exclusives leading to overloading of an escalator resulting in an accident which led to some casualties. Surely brought a sour note to kick start a joyous event.

That didn't deterred fans and collectors to flock into the event which we can check out from some notable reports:

1. Danny Choo: He is still in the process of sorting out and categorizing his haul of pictures, not alot of information but plenty of nicely taken pictures.

2. Moeyo: Still in process of updating for the rest of this week, surely the most comprehensive including pictures on cosplayers and individual reviews.

3. Akiba Hobby: A neat site with great pictures with some detailed reviews though pales in comparison to Moeyo.

4. foo-bar-baz: Love the way he/she categorized the pictures to different manufacturers even sub brands from the Wonderful Hobby Life for You booth.

5. Xenohawk: Nicely break up his report into manufacturers and independant resin kit booth.

6. Ami Ami: Pictures are not as well taken but nevertheless a great effort by the online toy store.

7. Shokugan Honpo: Their report which usually concentrate on trading figures and candy toys is not yet out but the complete list of exclusives can be seen.

Seriously this must be the most disappointing Wonder Festival for me, more on that in a while.
I managed to pick a few highlights (which had not been previewed previously) that actually perked my attention (but doesn't mean I'm getting them):

I sure miss the good old days when Wonder Festival gave me excitement with plenty of miniature magic such as Kaiyodo's various collaborations with the likes of Horico, Takara and Tomy and even K&M.
Don't even seen Kotobukiya's quality One Coin series in this event. Square Enix didn't bring their line of Play Arts to Trading Arts as seen in the recent San Diego Comic Convention...
Lastly Kaiyodo who is so devoted to Revoltech didn't even bother to come out exclusive of their mascots Wanda and Reset... I wonder would I attend the future Wonder Festival... You guys know I would...tee hee

(The first volume was rather disappointing in terms of overall sculpt but Hyaku Shiki looks really good here)

It was put to my attention that a pretty well-known wholesaler, East-up manages to ease up (sorry about the pun) on the ruling sanctioned by major gashapon manufacturers (Bandai & Yujin), and had been able to allow even non-clients to view the entire list of gashapons on offer for the next 3 months or so.

The original sanction was supposedly caused by the furore of hobby magazines like "Hobby Japan" & "Dengeki Hobby" who felt they should have the exclusive rights to the preview pictures and sales had been waning since the fact that collectors can easily accessed the pictures on the internet.

In the end they were more infauated with Gundam and other mecha products as well as PVC figurines, that gashapons ultimately took a backseat.

With that said, I am glad to be able to update you guys with some of the notable gashapon series to be released on monthly basis especially for a supporter of the capsule toys after many colletors had abandoned the genre over the years... Notable Gashapon series from Bandai for May:
